Pitfalls of filling managerial positions

Filling managerial posts involve many dangers. The first one is the charisma of the candidates. A candidate's magnetizing charisma does not mean that he is the right one for you. Charisma should not overshadow his professional qualities and experience. What else to watch out for? Inc.com advises:

Do not consider just the candidates who never failed

Perhaps you think that you do not want any failures. However, considering only applicants whose career is a success after success, is risky, too. It is very probable that the first failure will come at your company and the manager will miss the experience of dealing with such a failure. Applicants who have experiences a failure are also more motivated to achieve success.

Do not think that you know the candidate

Applicants may be your former schoolmates or even good friend of yours. It is always necessary to assess not only the qualities of individual candidates but also how you can work together - shared values and cultural norms.

Do not look for candidates until you know what you are looking for

Candidates for high level positions assume that the company knows what it wants. Before you start the recruitment process, therefore, set up the given job description based on open discussion in a working group which the new manager will join.

Do not rush

You are filling an important leadership position and you need to fill it quickly. Insufficient screening of applicants willm  however, be expensive in the end. Therefore, choose rather longer and more carefully.
