These are the main findings of the International Coach Federation's (ICF) Global Coaching Survey 2016 carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). This is the third edition of the most comprehensive global survey in the field of professional coaching. The aim of the study is to explore current trends in the development of coaching and identify challenges and opportunities the sector faces.
The study ran from July to December 2015 and involved more than 15,000 respondents from 137 countries. For the first time, it also includes specific data on managers and leaders who apply coaching skills in their organisations.
Who are coaches and what do they expect?
Most coaches are from Western Europe (35%) and North America (33%). 54% of them are over 50 years old. 67% of coaches and 66% leaders practising coaching are women. Two out of three coaches coach managers, executives and entrepreneurs. 60% of their clients are below the age of 45.
Regarding the obstacles coaches see ahead of them in the next 12 months, the biggest one is represented by self-appointed coaches who lack the necessary qualifications. Then there are concerns about the unclear situation in the market and overall market saturation. On the other hand, the biggest opportunities the next 12 months should bring include growing awareness of the advantages and benefits of coaching, better overall perception of coaching and greater availability of data demonstrating the ROI of coaching.
