The Czech Network of Mother Centres carried out an extensive survey among domestic employers focused on balancing family and work lives of their employees. 534 employers from all regions of the Czech Republic except the Capital City of Prague (39 to 44 organizations in each region) participated in the survey during the period from April to August 2012.
The survey confirmed the continuing disparity in the approach to employees during a crucial period for balancing their work and family responsibilities - the period when they have small children.
"Programs to support work-life balance have not become a Czech employers' standard yet," concludes the survey, "flexible forms of work as a tool for work-life balance or family-friendly benefits are neither offered adequately nor well-known in their wide range. The reasons stated for why they are not being used often show a low awareness of both employees and employers."
The authors of the survey, however, also note that not employers are responsible for the shortcomings. Employees must learn to assert their rights as a natural part of their working conditions, too.
