Do you want to start a career in HR and don't know how to do it? Then read the following tips published by the popular HR blog successinhr.com
As far as education, the majority of HR professionals came from the graduates of schools and courses focused on people management, psychology, sociology and other social sciences but also on business. Education alone is, however, not enough. You should, therefore, focus on the following six steps.
1. Join a professional organization dedicated to HR
Two leading international organizations are the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) and the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA). In Europe, it is the European Association for People Management (EAPM). People Management Forum (PMF) and Klub personalistů operate in the Czech Republic.
2. Find an HR professional to shadow
Schools are now trying to work more closely with companies so you can ask at your school if they could recommend you a suitable HR manager. Otherwise, you can use the Internet and social networks. You will see that you will find an interesting person who will devote a bit of his/her time to you.
3. Try an internship, even if low-paid
Even the most successful people have worked for free at first. An internship will help you get an insight into practice and gain valuable points for your CV. You also get the chance to meet people who can help you with a further development of your career in HR.
4. Sign up for a challenging HR task
Look around yourself and search for problems in the field of people management you can help to solve. Your superiors will at least notice that you are enthusiastic and remember what you want to do in the future.
5. Become a volunteer in HR
If you cannot get involved in a big HR task, enter the human resources department as a volunteer for everything that is needed. You can help with onboarding new employees, with job fairs at universities or various surveys.
6. Get to know what senior positions involve
As a newcomer to the filed of HR, you will work on a junior position. At the same time, however, you should know very well what a position that is one level above you involves. Learn from the person who is above you and always try to work as if you were already at the next level.
